Guests applaud and Prince Philip makes his speech. He emphasises that NATO is a defensive and co-operative alliance and refers to the fact that they are having dinner at the Guildhall and not a grand military parade. C/U of General Lauris Norstad (Supreme Allied Commander of Europe) applauding. The Prince talks of NATO allowing Europe to survive ten years of tension and crisis.
C/Us of Lord Ismay and Mr PH Spaak, President of the Council of Europe and Belgian Delegate to UNO. The Duke mentions "the lately retired guardian angel of NATO himself, Lord [Bernard] Montgomery", saying some think he's more like the wicked fairy at the moment, but says "I am quite sure that his annual diagnosis of the multitude of ghastly diseases which he announced to be gnawing at the vitals of NATO will be missed almost as much as his crusade through the capitals of Europe which blasted the peace of every ministry of defence". Laughter and applause from the guests.
The Duke raises a toast to NATO and the President of its Council, Dr Luns. Everyone stands up to drink the toast.
