  • Short Summary

Eton schoolboys run across muddy fields and try to leap across the famous water jump - they all fall in.

  • Description

In a traditional ceremony at Eton College, boys run across fields and jump into a muddy river.

    No titles.

    Eton, Berkshire.

M/S of a large group of boys in white shirts and long shorts getting ready for a race, taking off their blazers and hats. L/S of the massive group of boys running across what looks like a newly-ploughed field. L/S of two boys approaching the famous water jump; they both jump in and the winner climbs out and staggers towards the finishing line. A crowd of Eton schoolboys give him a feeble round of applause as he crosses the line then collapses on the ground.

Several more shots of boys jumping into the river and climbing out, soaked with muddy water - they must be freezing - the spectators are holding umbrellas! C/U of the winning boy, looking out of breath; he manages a smile.

Note: paperwork relating to this story says the last time the jump was cleared was in 1924.
