My father Tony Frish was a senior VC10 captain with BOAC & British Airways, retiring from the VC10 fleet in June 1975. Tony took me to Heathrow on several occasions I went twice with him to watch his “simulator detail”. It was exactly as described and shown in this clip from British Pathe. I remember the camera that followed the control input from the pilots and watched it move over a model of countryside and “a runway”, ie it wasn’t meant to be a model of a specific location. I also remember sitting outside the simulator with the nasty man who switched through various faults and challenges to the pilots. One such was a sudden crosswind gust moments before touchdown – the first officer was handling the landing and got caught off-guard by the gust and landed the simulator on the grass beside the runway. The unit then proceeded to bounce up and down most realistically. There was another incident where the "aircraft" ended up in Lake Windermere! Great stuff, regards Andy Frish
