• Short Summary

Great backstage shots and some of the acts in the West End theatre revue 'Folies En Parade'.

  • Description

Titles read: 'Now we are taking you over to the PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE, London, for a topical glance at - 'FOLIES en PARADE'.

High angle view of dance duo Alberta Mansfield and George Lamar in the last section of their number. She wears a long ruffled dress and he wears a suit. Chorus girls standing around them wear floaty dresses and hold open umbrellas. We hear the audience applauding as they take their bow.

We then see comedian Ronald Frankau and Renee Roberts as 'Albert and Mary' - a couple dressed in Victorian costume. Frankau bends down on one knee beside his Penny Farthing bicycle and sings to Renee about wanting to marry her because he loves her blue lips and ruby eyes. She sings back that she wants him to talk to her father. Shots are intercut during this, showing chorus girls waiting in the wings and men at work backstage.

The pair do a bit of patter, with Frankau telling Renee he'd like to elope with her and marry her at Gretna Garbo! Good shots of the audience. We hear about Frankau's chat with Renee's father concerning the marriage. A few titters are heard from the audience, but it doesn't seem like the act is going down a storm - perhaps we just can't hear the true reaction!

Next is acrobatic dancer Constance Evans in the final part of a dance routine with several men in top hat, white tie and tails. She demonstrates a novel way of getting up a staircase by doing the splits and climbing up each step in that position! Great shots of chorus girls getting ready for the entrance and putting in lipstick and general backstage stuff. Girls in elaborate costumes sashay onto the stage during this, the finale. Brief shots of the audience.

Note: film slips out of rack in several places in this transfer - you might need to go back to original film if entire story is required.

    This is absolutely amazing!

Having watched this video numerous times now, I had to comment. Alberta Mansfield actually lived in my town (Pennsauken, New Jersey, U.S.A.) and was a fellow church member. As a young girl from the Midwest, she embarked on a vaudeville career. The movie aspect came later; she left with a troupe to venture overseas (Paris, especially, though, obviously, Britain also factored in).

Having been quite reticent about focusing on the past, Alberta never said too much and, therefore, I was always reluctant to press the issue, though, of course, quite hopeful to learn more.

Alberta passed in 2006 and was, I'm quite certain, the last-surviving personnel member from most of her work.

I have been most anxious to find out anything more regarding her credits. Would anyone have information to add about her?

Thank you very much for your time and interest.

    Mike Parker in the U.S.
