  • Description

Titles read: 'Now Pathe Pictorial has pleasure in presenting - The popular comedian Hugh RENE from the Windmill Theatre London, in some new inventions'.

    Pathe Studio, London.

Comedian Hugh Rene walks onto a set dressed to look like an observatory / drawing room. He walks past the grand piano, saying that instead of singing us a song, he is going to show us some of his inventions.

The first is for shutting the door when someone has come into your office or home and left it open - it's a brick! Hugh explains that you throw the brick at the window and the draught coming through the hole blows the door shut. The next is an umbrella with a hole in it. To check if it has stopped raining, you move the hole around until it is above your head, then look through it. Then he puts on a belt with lots of steel spikes around it, for travelling in comfort on the tube. Next he shows us socks with holes at each end, so you can put them on from either end.

Lastly he shows us a lie-detector machine. Lights come on according to the size of the lie being told. Hugh's daughter comes in through the observatory doors and he asks her why she didn't come home last night. She says she sent him a wire (one lie detector light comes on), she missed the last train and there were no taxis (another light comes on) so she spent the night with Mother. Suddenly the screen blanks out as we hear a large explosion - obviously the machine blowing up!
