Nice footage of tourists visiting underground caves in Trieste.
Full title reads: "Inferno! Subterranean adventures deep in the Italian Alps."
Introductory intertitle reads: "The ancient caverns of Postumia Grotte, in Trieste - where Dante found inspiration, have been filmed."
High angle shot of a group of holidaymakers climbing onto a little open carriage train. L/S of the train moving towards a cave. Great shot inside the cave showing the train moving through and pedestrians walking into the caverns. A man walks along with a flare which lights up the caves. There are several flares being held by people on the train too - this gives a lovely light inside the caverns. The train approaches the camera - some of the sightseers wave at the camera. Various shots of the train travelling along.
"Ten miles deep in a world of lurking shadows - " Train approaches the camera with the flares lighting the way and giving off a large amount of smoke. "Discovered in 1213 A.D. these caverns were lost again in the Middle Ages, and found again in 1818." L/S of the crowded train and pedestrians in the caves.
"The Grotta del Paradiso just shatters torch light into splinters." L/S of men walking through the caves shining torches. The light is refracted - looks like a laser show in a 1980s disco!
Note: lovely jaunty music throughout.
