  • Description

Reel 2. Title for this section reads: "Construction of High Voltage Transmission Line by Messrs. W.T. Henley's Telegraph Works Co. Ltd."

The Pile Driver arrives. M/S of the Pile Driver being moved into place. A caterpillar with pile and monkey passes the camera. Various shots of men at work preparing the make a trench. Foundations for another tower are under preparation - material for making concrete is unloaded. L/S of men on top of a wooden platform winding up a winch. A crane swings around and stones are deposited into a barrow. The barrow is pushed along then rolls down a wooden slope with the men standing on the back. Various shots of the excavation of foundations. Reinforcement rods are placed in position. Men stand in a hole in the ground and the rods are passed down to them. Templates for the foundation bolts of the tower are adjusted. Twin transmission line towers are erected. Panels are prepared before being ready for lifting into position. L/S of several men at work on the towers. A pole is hoisted up. L/S showing other electricity pylons in the background. Low angle shot of men at work high up on the pylons. Three men pull the pole into place with ropes. The bracing is lifted and bolted into place. Shot of the half finished tower behind a completed tower. Camera tilts up to show the whole tower. The base of the tower is fixed to the ground. Shots of the bottom of the "legs" and shots of competed pylons. "Stringing insulators" is shown. A car drives along with men guiding the cable following behind. M/S of huge bobbins holding cables - the cable unwinds. Men follow the car guiding the cable. "After cable has been put up and measured, it is transferred from running blocks to permanent clamps." Low angle shot of two men climbing up the pylon. M/S and C/U of men working right at the very top of the pylon. Three men at the bottom of the pylon send things up and down by winch. "At an angle tower a joint is being made..." C/U of man using a small hacksaw. The insulator - now attached to a cable is hoisted up the pylon. C/U of two men leaning out to attach the insulator to the pylon (looks dangerous!) The temporary hoisting clamp is removed.

The tension of the wires is regulated. A tractor pulls the wire taught and a tension measuring device is used. C/U of tractor device. Man driving is apparently adjusting tension of the wire. Completed towers are shown. Contractors and CEB engineers inspect the finished line and see conductors leading from circuit breaker in transformer station. L/S of group of men in mackintoshes inspecting the pylons and lines. Connecting to first tower of transmission line. Twin tower of second transmission line. Various shots of the pylons and panning shot of the electricity station.
