The canoeists are members of the British Canoe Union and they are attempting to pass through obstacle gates without bumping the poles. Various shots of competitors and judges. Spectators watch from the banks of the river. M/S of group of people preparing to get into canoes. C/U of a young woman putting on a lifejacket. High angle shot of her climbing down steps to her canoe. She climbs in. Man on the bank assembles an oar. M/S of a middle aged man who climbs into a canoe and fixes the spray cover around his waist. He canoes off.
C/U of some of the spectators, one of the women wears a remarkable paper hat. Moving shot (presumably filmed from a canoe) of competitors crossing the starting line. M/S of two judges setting their stopwatches. Male canoeist demonstrates an "Eskimo roll", rolling his canoe going under the water then bobbing up again. Narrator describes the canoes which are all of the "kayak" type - most are made of ash wood but one has an aluminium frame. Various shots of competitors making their way through the poles trying not to touch them. One of the competitors is a woman. Interspersed with shots of the canoeists are shots of spectators - including some in boats.
