• Short Summary

A mechanical elephant takes a stroll in a park and meets a real one.

  • Description

    (Pathetone main titles.)

Titles read: "Meet 'Mechanical El.' He's an elephant, synthetic, and a pain in the neck to the usual kind."

    Location of events unknown.

Various shots of a mechanical elephant walking across a field in a park; a large cloud of smoke comes out of a kind of exhaust pipe at the rear of the machine. A little boy sits on a seat on the elephant's back, and a man sits on top, 'driving' the contraption. A real elephant comes over to have a look; he seems a bit freaked out by it!

I think that Elephant is as was reported in the Sunday Pictorial on page 15 Sunday 28 August 1932 - and I suspect the location is the zoo in Paris that there brief caption mentions.

I have no more information but there could be value in linking all the news about these mechanical elephants - you have other reports from the 1940s and fifties - I am disabled and not good at organising but would be interested to link others up to what I know.

Meanwhile via the British Newspaper Archive here is a link to that Sunday Pictoriasl article - I hope - https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/BL/0000844/19320828/131/0015?browse=true
