  • Short Summary

Wembley Exhibition "Never Stop Railway" is seen various cosmopolitan passengers.

  • Description

M/S of a group of non-caucasian men and women boarding the "Never Stop Railway." (This is almost definitely at the Wembley Exhibition in 1925 - the Never Stop Railway was a step-on, step-off method of moving around the Exhibition. The carriages look very much like American cable car carriages and they are powered by a kind of moving screw device which keeps them constantly moving at a slow pace.)

A variety of national dress is seen - men in fez hats and women in long draped skirts. There are some black soldiers in military dress. A group of white people then board the train - the men in suits and the women in cloche hats and long day dresses. There is a small boy in the group who is dressed in military uniform (5 or 6 years old.) M/S of the foreign ladies and gentlemen standing in the carriages of the Never Stop Railway as it passes the camera. They stare out at the camera without smiling. Another shot of the Brits boarding the train - one man is dressed in top hat and tails. Moving shot from the front of one of the carriages shows the track the train runs on and other carriages. Adverts on the front of one carriage reads: "Take the right line - read John Bull" and on another: "John Bull - world's greatest free insurance gift." Views as carriage passes under tunnels. Shot as the train approaches one of the stops - "Midway - For Palace of Engineering and Amusements Park" reads a sign. A large group of people stand on the platform and are seen through the back window of the carriage in front. A soldier stands to attention on the platform whilst in M/S the train moves past. Black soldier in uniform salutes and another man in African traditional dress waves to the camera. One of the men crouches on top of an advert for Punch. The group get off the train and wave as they walk past the camera.

Note: there are no intertitles in this piece - shots are separated with the popular pictorial device of irising in and out . May be unedited footage.
