1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, Swimming final ends in fatherly embrace in the pool

  • Description

Nice high wide angle of the start of a swimming race. High angle pan from stand full of spectators to swimmers racing in the pool. Same pan from stand to pool as swimmers make the turn. Swimming officials with equipment at the side of the pool as swimmers go past. Slightly longer than usual shot of spectators watching the swimming. Brief low behind shot of swimming medal ceremony. Male spectator applauds. Regular angle of start of men's 400 metres freestyle race, with the camera following the swimmers almost a whole length. Slightly tighter shot of France's Jean Boiteux in the lead as he makes the turn and heads back the other way. Close up of Jean Boiteux and USA's Ford Konno battling it out for the lead. Close up of swimming officials as swimmers turn. Close up of Boiteux as he pulls away. Wider shot of Boiteux and Konno as they sprint for the finish almost neck and neck, before Boiteux touches home in an Olympic record time. Very amusing scene as his father, fully clothed and wearing a beret, leaps into the pool and hugs Boiteux. Close up of his father still hugging Boiteux while photographers snap away, before he is helped out, and congratulated. Wide shot of flags being raised during the medal ceremony, with the French flag in gold medal position, USA in silver, and Sweden (though unclear) in bronze.
