West Germany had won the race, but East Germany had protested against an illegal shove by them during the final. Interesting wide angle of medal ceremony, with Denmark taking the gold medal, and Italy the bronze. The Danish and Italian teams are on the podium, but no silver medal was awarded, pending appeal, so the podium space is empty. The silver was later awarded to West Germany.
