1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, US wins golds in the water

  • Description

Slate reading 'US Rules World In Sports'. USA's Dorothy Poynton performing dive in the women's 10 metre platform, in which she won the gold medal. Poynton executing rather simple-looking swan dive. Lovely interview, with audio, with Poynton in her swimming hat and costume, in which she says 'it certainly is a grand feeling, to win the high diving championship for the United States'.
Swimming action next, and the start of the women's 100 metres backstroke final. Brief shot spectators watching, then lead swimmers making the turn. Close up USA's Eleanor Holm leading at the turn, then spectators. Close up Holm pulling away from Australia's Bonnie Mealing to touch home first. Lovely interview, with audio, with a grinning Holm, who says 'I can't tell you how glad I am to have been able to win the championship. The last 3 years I've been thinking about it, and I can't believe it's over', and she departs quickly.
Rowing action next, and the start of the men's eights final. Lead crews battling for lead, then tracking shot from bank of men running to keep up with the race. Spectators watching, then close up USA pulling away slightly from Italy. Pan along crowds of spectators watching on from the bank, then USA crossing the line to win gold, with Italy taking the silver, and Canada the bronze.
