LV. Ernest Bevin, Foreign Secretary rises to speak. SV Bevin speaking: "..that all we were doing was trying to create a king of barrier or a means in which we could build a force to defeat the Soviet Government someday in the future, Now, I assert, with all the solemnity I have in me, that that never entered our heads".
SV Bevin speech continued: "I would regard it as the crowning event of my life to establish European unity on a sound, definite and progressive basis..."
SV Bevin speech continued: "I want the working men and women of Europe to have a decent standard of life. Good houses, good education, good resources, everything that can make for their happiness, and, if this wretched ideological difference - difficulty could be removed, the resources now at our disposal would make Europe recover in a very, very short time."
