• Short Summary

Scenes of the end of the day in London and in the countryside are seen with musical accompaniment.

  • Description

Introductory intertitle reads: "Curfew time, and country and City are homeward bound, the toil of the day is ended - " The J.H. Squire Octet is seen playing in a studio setting. They wear dark suits and bow ties. The conductor (J.H. Squire) wears a monocle.

As the music plays, shots of London are intercut with shots of the musicians. Scenic shots of Big Ben, commuters crossing one of the London bridges, the Thames and Tower Bridge. "Hurrying, scurrying, the murmur of their tramping feet is the music of eventide - " Nice low angle shot of the feet of men and women as they run up some stone steps. Various shots of legs and feet as workers make their way home. The moving camera follows the walkers. M/S of workers climbing aboard a tram.

A singer we do not see sings a song about twilight. Shots of the countryside at the end of the day are intercut with shots of the musicians. A cart laden down with hay is pulled into a barn by horses, sheep are rounded up, a farmer returns home, the gate of a pen is closed etc. Church bells ring, a man walks into a churchyard and we see the sunset. Last few feet of soundtrack do not have corresponding images - some visuals seem to be lost.

Note: nice footage of commuters making their way home after a hard day at work. Some of the shots look very familiar and may well have been used in other items.
