  • Short Summary

Great footage of an evangelical preacher who gives his sermon from a ship's mast.

  • Description

    No title.

"The Seamen's Bethel where those, who "go down to the sea in ships" are made to feel at home on Sundays. - New Bedford, Mass." L/S of a building with a couple of cars parked outside. A sign over the door reads: "Seamen's Bethel". A man stands in front of the building and moves towards the camera. "The "Skipper" of the church, Chaplain Thurbur, shows the way through life's storms, from his masthead pulpit." Short shot of the vicar who looks like he is preaching on a boat. "Throwing out the life line." Low angle shot of the preacher who is standing up on top of the mast - almost in the crows nest. It is quite funny! He is preaching a sermon. "Possibly the preacher is thinking of the rock-bound coast of Bandon-by-the-sea, Oregon." (shot missing?) "Where jagged rock tomb-stones grimly mark the graves of twenty ships wrecked in a dozen years." L/S of fierce waves crashing against rocks. Various shots of the sea. The "rock-bound coast" intertitle is repeated as is the first intertitle. L/S of the front of the Seamen's Bethel, similar to the first shot except this time the camera tilts up to show more of the building. Interior of the church. The preacher stands at the front with a bible in his hand - there are fishermen seated in the congregation. The "masthead pulpit" intertitle is repeated. We see the preacher climbing the mast. Good C/U of him preaching from on high - he spreads out his arms as he speaks. "jagged rock tomb-stones" intertitle repeated with other shots of rough seas including waves breaking over shipwrecks. M/S of the preacher on the mast.

Note: great stuff of evangelical style ranting and raving preacher.

Paper records state that this was an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 567 of 11/2/1929. As this is an unedited section from a "Walter Futter's Curiosities" film, I would predict that this film was retitled for use in Pathe Pictorial 567 item "The Masthead Pulpit".

    Amber tinted nitrate print.
