    Seed of a pea plant shown growing through time lapse photography. The root of the plant puts out other roots which in turn grow hairs to extract nourishment from the soil. Seen in C/U. The young plant pushes through the soil. Young shoots growing in time lapse. Feelers are so sensitive that they will grow around a single hair. The young plants avoid gripping on to each other. If a suitable branch is put close to them they grow around it. Flowers open in accordance with weather conditions. C/U of petals opening. The "keel" is pointed out. Model of a flower is used to show how female portion of flower is exposed when petals are pulled down. Anthers are pointed out.

    Animation of pollen being produced. Our friend "Bertie" the Secrets of Nature model bee, lands on the flower and has pollen brushed on to his body. A real bee is shown extracting honey from the flower. It tries various ways of getting at the honey but the flower is designed to let the bee in only at a certain angle which ensures pollination. C/U of pollen grains under a microscope. Male element of pollen necessary for fertilisation seen in x-ray under microscope. Graphic animation of the fertilisation process. Flower opens and the pea pod grows down. Pod splits open and the peas pop off "far and wide" - model. Pea on the ground grows in time lapse and puts out roots. It dies because it hasn't landed in the right spot. Another is more successful . C/U of the flower opening.
