• Short Summary

Las Vegas of the English Riviera - illuminated pier of Southend on Sea rivals the illuminations of Vegas.

  • Description

    Southend on Sea, Essex

L/S of the Southend-on-Sea pier. The pier looks very dark, as if it is shot at night. Cut to a M/S of a man adjusting the fuses. C/U shot of the wall clock reading 6 o'clock. M/S of the man pushing a switch. Cut to a long shot of the pier lighting up. Great shot!

C/U shot on a sign at the entrance reading 'PIER'. Several shots of the lights looking impressive. C/U shot of illuminated ship with the middle part missing - looks strange. "And with 75000 lamps out there, you can bet this town isn't exactly a rest home for electricians!" - says the voiceover.

C/U low angle shot of a man in a uniform wearing glasses - chief engineer Gonle (sp?). M/S of Mr. Gonle supervising two electricians at work. C/U shot of a wooden door. M/S of a man opening it to reveal two fuses and a switch. C/U shot of the man changing one of the fuses. Cut to C/U shot of the illuminated boat - missing middle bit is working now.

Succession of C/U shots showing whole world of illuminations: 'a woman taking a shower with help of an elephant', 'a boy and a girl', 'ballerina on the moon', 'sailing ship', 'woman playing with her dog', stork, clown, peacock - all 'moving pictures' creating the explosion of light and colours.

M/S of a man checking the mechanism of one of the illuminated 'moving pictures'. This is what happens behind the scenes - men constantly working to keep the lights as magnificent as they are.
