• Short Summary

Scientists at Harwell research into Nuclear fusion for power generation.

  • Description

Full title reads: "Harwell. Taming The H Bomb".

Harwell Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Berkshire.

LV Prototype of Zeta (particle accelerator?). CU Technicians watching. CU Flash. GV Zeta Torus and transformer with scientist climbing up ladder to upper control deck. Angle shot of another scientist. SV Scientists taking readings.

CU Mr RS Pease, left, in charge of the Physics dept., and Mr R Carruthers, who designed Zeta, also an engineer. CU Mr Carruthers.

SV Sir John Cockcroft, Director of Harwell speaking "The possibility we are exploring is the fusion or joining together of atoms of heavy hydrogen to release energy. In the Zeta apparatus we have produced gas temperatures which are about one-third of those at the centre of the sun. This is about five million degrees, and we have held these temperatures for a few thousandths of a second and have repeated them every ten seconds for thousands of times. If these developments prove ultimately successful and it is a long-term project,we should have a quite inexhaustible supply of fuel to provide for man's needs in the future".

GV of Zeta. Various shots of electrical equipment and control panels.

SV Mr Butt, controller of Zeta, sitting at control panel desk. CU Flashes on graph. SV Mr. Butt gets up from desk and walks round to look through window opening onto Zeta. LV Mr. Butt peering through window at water condensing on outside of liquid nitrogen tubes. LV Mr. Butt in control room, he walks from window to panel of dials. CU Mr. Butt looking at dials. CUs of dials working. GV of Zeta.
