  • Short Summary

A cabaret party at London's Coconut Grove to celebrate the 300th performance of the show 'Balalaika' - unfortunately without soundtrack.

  • Description

Soundtrack is currently missing for this item.

Titles read: 'Now Pathetone is taking you over to one of London's famous night Rendezvous THE COCONUT GROVE for "Cabaret Time after Midnight"'.

Various shots at the Coconut Grove showing elegant people sitting at tables and dancing. Paperwork says it is 'Balalaika Night' - 'Balalaika' was a current west end show. Two women holding cigarettes saunter into the club; their gentleman escort signs the membership book (?) then follows them in. Stars of the day are seen at tables, including composer George Posford, author Eric Maschwitz (who wrote 'Balalaika'), Walford Hyden (of 'Cafe Colette' fame, according to paperwork), and dancer Cleo Nordi. A man hides behind a paper fan to escape the camera.

The Viennese Singing Sisters do their act on the dance floor - alas, no soundtrack! Five pretty girls in long satin gowns sing; another plays the piano. It looks like quite a good act - no mention in paperwork of what their song is. Then we see the dance act of Terry and Doric Kendall and Frank. They do a little comedy dance in old-fashioned (Victorian?) costume, as a father, a daughter and the daughter's lover. The lover drops a love letter from the daughter, the father finds it, reads it and is about to shoot the lover, but in the end just forces him at gunpoint to marry the daughter.

Walford Hyden then conducts the orchestra and singers from 'Balalaika', who have apparently dropped in after their 300th performance to entertain the guests. They are all dressed in Russian peasant costume.

Note: I cannot find a definitive spelling for Coconut / Cocoanut Grove. Does anyone know?
