  • Short Summary

Various shots of an area of thermal activity in Japan.

  • Description

    No title.

Panning shot of a Japanese landscape - mountainous region with thermal activity - steam rises from the hillsides. A few people walk through the landscape - dwarfed by the hills. "One of the many springs of furiously boiling sulphur water." is shown. Man stands close to the spring - looks as if he is pretending to put his hand in the water. He stands up and walks away from the spring. "Cannon Hill is well named. Sulphurous gases and blistering mud burst forth to scald the unwary invader." C/U of a small geyser bubbling away amongst some rocks. Panning shot showing caves. "The Devil's Bowl." - Subterranean fires have thrown up molten metal to fashion a natural cauldron of iron." C/U of a man tapping the ground with a rock to show how hard the ground is. "Red Hell Crater" - a boiling mass of bluish-grey lava straight from the white-hot depths of the unknown." high angle shot of pool of plopping mud.

"Into this seething inferno many disappointed lovers have taken their last leap." A spot for suicides I presume. Various shots of the boiling mud. C/U of a man dressed in a mackintosh and hat crouches down and smears white mud on his wrist - a natural cure for arthritis perhaps? "Even on safe ground, stones are cracked with the terrific heat, and the air is filled with rushing jets of steam, groaning, whistling, and shrieking in a pandemonium of awful sound, creating an indelible memory." High angle of landscape, several small figures walk amidst the steam.
