    1932 - Depression does not stop progress and inventions. River of cars on a busy street of New York. High angle shot of the street through the skyscrapers. High angle shot of the skyscrapers - a bird's view. M/S of an aeroplane in the sky. Cut to the top shot of the skyscrapers.

    M/S of the interior of the aircraft demonstrating the new invention, an apparatus which enables the aircraft to fly without pilot - an automatic pilot. C/U shot of the apparatus and the abandoned command board and steering wheels.

    More ingenuity - High angle shot of a sailing warship. M/S of a bag reading "US MAIL for the PRESIDENT...(unclear)". Top shot of a bag with mail being dropped on the ship from the aircraft. President Hoover, who is cruising with the Navy, can keep abreast with affairs of the state. L/S of the White House from afar with a helicopter descending.

    Cut to a panning shot of helicopter landing at the steps of the White House. M/S of the two golfers armed with golf clubs entering the helicopter. Panning shot of the helicopter / autogyro leaving White House.

    L/S of the mass of war veterans gathered in front of the White House to seek payment of a promised bonus (The Bonus Army). Cut on a succession of L/S of the troops on horses, then tanks, and finally the ground troops brought to confront them. Army uses tear gas and bayonets to disperse the veterans. Shots of riots: police arrests, shooting, gas, soldiers running, veterans running up the stairs of the Capitol Building. Tilt from the rooftop of the Capitol Building towards the ground. Stairs are covered with people. Cut to the side shot of the White House.

    L/S - a group portrait of a cabinet. Cut to a congress hall full of people - Republican Congress in Chicago. M/S of former President Calvin Coolidge addressing the crowd. L/S of Mr Coolidge addressing the crowd. Cut to the cheering crowd. Voice-over explains that Mr Coolidge blames world depression, not the negligence of the government for the bad times. He speaks in favour of the President Hoover. L/S of President Herbert Hoover with wife and patronage leaving a building. Cut to M/S of Hoover and wife.

    L/S of masses of people walking, gathering for the Democratic Convention in Chicago, voice-over explains. "In contrast to the Republican, the Democratic Convention was one of fierce thrust and parry". There are two favourites for the presidential candidate: Al Smith and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Several high angle shots of the crowd in the conference hall. C/U of the face of Al Smith. L/S of Franklin Delano Roosevelt with family. M/S of Roosevelt with a family, smiling and talking. C/U on Al Smith smiling. Narrator talks about the rivalry between them.

    L/S of the masses in the conference hall. Speaker after speaker, support goes from Al Smith to Franklin Roosevelt and back. Various shots of speakers and crowd. Finally, vote goes to Roosevelt. L/S of Roosevelt talking to the press. Roosevelt flies to Chicago to accept the nomination in person - something new in American history. Panning shot of the aeroplane rising form the ground. Chicago Republican party Congress ends as the two rivals shake hands.

    Electoral campaign has started. High angle shot of the crowd at the town square. Panning shot across the masses of people. Cut to a moving train. Point of view shot at the masses cheering the train as it passes by. Lots of opened umbrellas in the crowd. L/S of the crowd with umbrellas. Several shots of supporters of both candidates, carrying American flags. Item continues on reel 4 - see separate record.
