    Trouble in Ireland - 1920? (Southern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Eire).

    Soldiers; possibly Royal Irish Constabulary - the Black and Tans - are preparing to defend garrison or other place. Opens w/ shot of vehicles approaching through stone arch. Horse-drawn wagons; Army trucks; automobile.

    CU soldier speaking; standing by open car; above level of crowd of civilians around him. Soldiers march through arch gate. Soldiers marching through courtyard. MS 3 soldiers; 2 hold ends of a long 2 x 4 board and turn it as the 3rd holds barbed wire which is being wrapped round the board. The soldiers hold up the board; more soldiers are standing around them. They walk away from camera. Soldiers arranging more barbed wire. Various shots of soldiers constructing barricades of barbed wire and sandbags. Soldier w/ rifle standing behind sandbags; other buildings in BG.

    Then; several soldiers are pulling & twisting barbed wire into a thick mess; along edge of a wall - some sort of fortress; in BG glimpses of people in street beyond. Soldiers groom horses. Pan along long line of horses rear ends. Officers wander about, overseeing the grooming session.

    Irish revolution - 1916-1920. Slow pan around central town area (Dublin?) w/ much destruction. Rubble from bombed building; w/ smoke still rising. Many pedestrians wandering around in street. Group of people standing by some monument; soldier w/ rifle among them. More damage. Pan past bombed out hotel still w/ signs for 'Luncheon & Rooms' when there are obviously no rooms left. CU group of soldiers drinking from cups; in street; pan left to counter set up & staffed by women. ECU Paper held up to camera; 'Irish War News. The Irish Republic.' Headline is 'If the Germans Conquered England' - which leads one to believe this may be from the Easter Rebellion of 1916; when some Irish rebels were trying to get help from Germany.

    this film is made up of 2 separate sections.

    1. relates to the withdrawal of British troops from Ireland

    CU soldier speaking; standing by open car; above level of crowd of civilians around him - this soldier wears the uniform of the new Irish Free State National Army

    Soldiers march through arch gate. Soldiers marching through courtyard. - these are IRA/National Army soldiers taking over a barracks after the British withdrawal

    2. the damaged buildings and the soldiers eating is from 1916 and elements can be seen in the following 1916 film clips
