  • Short Summary

Student parade and perform antics in Exeter to illustrate the different stages of life.

  • Description

Item title reads: "What a life. "Christening" - "Youth" "Marriage" - "Old Age" theme of University Students great Charity Rag..."

    Exeter, Devon

M/S of students mocking the ages of man, a group of young men appear to bash horrible doll figures. L/S of a street parade, with students dressed as babies, some wheeled through the streets in prams and pushchairs. A banner is paraded with 'marriage' on it, and a very tall man dressed as a bride can be seen. A figure is wheeled by in a bathchair to illustrate old age. M/S of a group of cheering young women students pose for the camera waving white collection boxes. This is followed by a sequence bannered as the 'official opening of Exeter broadcasting', showing the unveiling of a strange machine with dials, to represent a radio station. This is all made of cardboard and odd bits and bob. An 'engineer' listens with a headset and the mock mayor 'tunes in'.

Note: These were early days for radio - let alone making fun of it - but students certainly knew how to put on a show and amuse everyone with their stunts. Quirky.
