  • Short Summary

Various shots of traffic filled streets in London, Sunderland, Leeds and Newcastle.

  • Description

    Hyde Park Corner, London.

"Thirty six years ago, when taxis and luxurious buses were unknown. Incidentally, this is one of the world's earliest films." Footage of Hyde Park Corner - presumably shot in 1895. Street scene showing pedestrians and horse drawn carriages. "The Bank had its traffic troubles, even in those more leisurely days." Shot missing? "A striking contrast from today." M/S from high vantage point of London traffic passing the Bank of England. "And glance at Sunderland in 1896 - especially the "rocking horse" trams - " Pedestrians walk across a bridge - an iron bridge is visible in the background. Horse drawn tram passes the camera. "In those days, too, in Leeds, they ran three kinds of public vehicles simultaneously ... horse-tram, steam-tram, and electric!" M/S of snow covered square in Leeds with traffic passing camera - this film looks older. Lots of horse drawn vehicles, pedestrians, trams etc. The film has been under-cranked so looks too fast. "What this Newcastle motorist of thirty years ago would think about today's traffic - is another matter." Man drives a brewer's van with barrels of beer on the back - looks to be a steam driven vehicle. A car follows behind. High angle shot of busy traffic intersection in London - St Martin's in the Field visible (I think). Lots of buses and trams.

Was originally an item in Pathe Pictorial issue number 681.

Note: yellow tinted nitrate print. Paper records state that some of the material bought in from Hendersons.

See also shorter and slightly different version of this story in can EP310.

This item may have originally be stored in another can (UN13F?) - discovered in 1999. Have created new cans for these "orphan items" - EP312 and EP313.
