  • Short Summary

Women perform their synchronised exercises in the open air.

  • Description

Unused / unissued material - no paperwork - dates unclear or unknown.

Members of the Women's League of Health and Beauty perform some of their exercises outdoors in the open air. It is a kind of synchronised PT display. Some of the women also perform more dance type manoeuvres in long diaphanous dress. Yet another group perform an odd little dance numbers. A man speaks to the crowd. Shots of the women marching past (they are singing - sadly the item is mute) A woman sings a song on an outdoor stage (her dress has the initials 'EF' on it) she might be calling out instructions. Various shots of the crowd - several have umbrellas to protect them against the rain. Two children shelter under a brolly. Shots of the band who are providing music to keep everyone in time.

N.B. Although founded as part of the 1930s health fad they are still going strong today - ask Sarah Lee.

The lady with 'EF' on her top is indeed directing the exercises. She is Eileen Fowler, the founder of the Keep Fit Association in 1956. There are photos of her with her students who also have the 'EF' on their shirts. She broadcast keep fit exercises on the radio and later on television. 'Her first show drew 10,000 requests for her exercises, which had comforting titles such as "stretchaway", "skipalong" and "swingtime".' (Quotation from her obituary in 'The Guardian'.)
