  • Short Summary

A look at the lives of people on the Aran Islands.

  • Description

Although suggested by the contemporary title cards as being on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, the film shows the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland.

Title: "WONDERFUL WESTERN ISLANDERS. Remote from civilisation, unique in custom, these hardy Arran islanders eke out an existence from barren and rock-bound soil".

Intertitle: "Having no harbour, the islanders drive their stock into the sea, hold them by ropes to the frail curraghs, and swim them out to the steamer".

Intertitle: "For oars, the islanders use long bladeless poles, and manoeuvre their curraghs with skill and intrepidity".

Intertitle: "WONDERFUL WESTERN ISLANDERS. Part Two".

Intertitle: "Making pampooties, the footwear that renders rock climbing comparatively easy, from the raw cowhide".

M/S of a group of woman and girls in shawls sitting on the beach next to bundles and baskets. M/S of several men wading out to sea to collect a live bull from a rowing boat, another rowing boat can be seen in the distance. L/S, taken from out at sea, of people on the beach.

M/S of a man leading a pack donkey past the cottage towards the camera. M/S of some men from the island and the men in plus fours playing a game that involves throwing a weight, a group of children watch.

M/S of two men putting on extra layers of clothes whilst sitting on the beach - possibly in preparation for going out to sea or climbing the cliffs, children in the background laugh at the camera.
