  • Short Summary

A look at the lives of people on the Aran Islands.

  • Description

Although suggested by the contemporary title cards as being on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, the film shows the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland.

Title: "WONDERFUL WESTERN ISLANDERS. Remote from civilisation, unique in custom, these hardy Arran islanders eke out an existence from barren and rock-bound soil".

Intertitle: "Having no harbour, the islanders drive their stock into the sea, hold them by ropes to the frail curraghs, and swim them out to the steamer".

Intertitle: "For oars, the islanders use long bladeless poles, and manoeuvre their curraghs with skill and intrepidity".

Intertitle: "WONDERFUL WESTERN ISLANDERS. Part Two".

Intertitle: "Making pampooties, the footwear that renders rock climbing comparatively easy, from the raw cowhide".
